Fellows have nearly two years of protected research time during their 3-year fellowship with occasional weekend call responsibilities. Our fellows routinely present their research at national and international meetings (Pediatric Academic Societies, American Thoracic Society, Midwest Society for Pediatric Research and others), publish in high-impact journals and often obtain extramural funding for their research. Fellows may select research mentors from throughout Washington University School of Medicine in basic science, translational or clinical research, or quality improvement and patient safety. Fellows receive guidance in selecting a research mentor from the program directors, Jennifer Wambach, MD, MS and Sam Julian, MD.
Accomplished research mentors from multiple research domains are available thanks to Washington University School of Medicine’s achievements as one of the top research institutions in the country with $576 million in National Institutes of Health funding in 2021. The Institute for Clinical and Translational Studies provides support and infrastructure for clinical and translational research. The Children’s Discovery Institute is a unique collaboration between St. Louis Children’s Hospital and the Department of Pediatrics with centers for the investigation of congenital heart disease, pediatric cancer, pediatric pulmonary disease and musculoskeletal and metabolic diseases. Research facilities for the Department of Pediatrics are located in the state-of-the-art McDonnell Pediatric Research Building.
